A Practical Guide to UX Research Methods
UX research doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming. The key is picking the right method for the question you're trying to answer.
Generative vs. Evaluative
Generative research helps you discover problems and opportunities. Use interviews, diary studies, and contextual inquiry when you're exploring a new space.
Evaluative research helps you test solutions. Use usability testing, A/B tests, and surveys when you have something concrete to validate.
Our go-to stack
For most projects, we start with 5-8 user interviews, run a competitive analysis, and create a journey map. This gives us enough insight to start designing with confidence.
Once we have prototypes, we run moderated usability tests with 5 participants. Five users will uncover 85% of usability issues — you don't need more than that.
